My father was serving in the British Royal Navy as an engineer and he was sent over to Hengelo to oversee the procurement of a radar from Signal for the Royal Navy. My family moved to Hengelo for his tour of duty and we lived at 18 Poolsterstraaat. I was 6 years old in 1965 when I arrived in the Netherlands only speaking English. I soon learnt to speak Dutch because the children I played with only spoke Dutch. By the end of 2 and 1/2 years in the Netherlands I could speak and write fluent Dutch. I have a few memories of living in Hengelo including helping the milkman deliver milk on his horse and cart. I think that the school was built in 1965 or 1966 as I remember my class making the mosaics which I think are still in the walls of the school to this day. Then the day came to move into the new school. I was in first grade when I joined the school in April 1965 and was in second grade in 65/66 and third grade in 66/67 with Mr Smith Does anyone have any pictures of the mosaics? Also does anyone have any class photographs from the period I was at the school.
