We emmigrated to the United States (California) in 1956. I and my sister attended the Kleuterschool, I in 1954-1955, my sister from 1953-1954. We then attended The Calvijn School. My first grade teacher was Mevrouw Roos. I remember our first lesson of the day was to learn the alphabet and to write cursively. I still remember my first exosure to recent history, the invasion by the Germans and the allied paratrooper landings during operation Market Garden. Me lessons were far advanced in relation to the lessons I first received in the American school that I first attended here in the States. I have fond memories of walking home over the Handweg to our house on Aagjedekenlaan, nummer 29 and during the winter months walking home over the ice on de Poel.
